Teaching Autobiography of Red This Week

Wrote about it when I first read it five years ago here, favorite lines here.

Now my favorite lines might come from the opening translations:

Geryon was a monster everything about him was red
Put his snout out of the covers in the morning it was red
How stiff the red landscape where his cattle scraped against
Their hobbles in the red wind
Burrowed himself down in the red dawn jelly of Geryon's
Dream
Geryon's dream began red then slipped out of the vat and ran
Upsail broke silver shot up through his roots like a pup
Secret pup At the end of another red day

Beard

I've never been able to grow a beard but mostly that's because I've never really put my mind to it. Or I have some sort of testosterone deficiency. Either way, now that I more or less have a month with nowhere to go, I figured I'd try.

That image is where we currently stand. I think the right side of my face is winning, but mostly I'm disappointed that A) there's a competition and B) I could tabulate a winner to the competition. I had to stand really close to the mirror in order to do that. Mine is not a beard that can be seen at a distance.

I chose red for the image because that's a color that would stand out not because it's the color the beard is growing in. As far as you know.

Unless parts of my beard start connecting themselves, I think I'm going to shave soon.

We are now on our fifth couch in two years. I don't even remember them any more. There was a green one, a yellow one, a gold one, and then a red one.

This is the reason why we keep getting new couches:

The new one is brown.

From The Tin Drum:

"In Maria's hand a hissing and bubbling set in. The woodruff erupted like a volcano, seethed like the greenish fury of some exotic nation. Something was going on that Maria had never seen and probably never felt, for her hand quivered, trembled, and tried to fly away, for woodruff was biting her woodruff penetrated her skin, woodruff excited her, gave her a feeling, a feeling, a feeling...

The green grew greener, but Maria grew red, raised her hand to her mouth, and licked her palm with a long tongue. This she did several times, so frantically that Oskar was close to supposing that her tongue, far from appeasing the woodruff feeling that so stirred her, raised it to the limit, perhaps beyond the limit, that is appointed to all feeling."

I swear to god, this "Fizz Powder" chapter in The Tin Drum may be the dirtiest thing I have ever read, at least the dirtiest thing involving candy, a young man in suspended toddlerhood, and woodruff.

I am horribly, horribly sunburned. All I have to look forward to now is the brief period of time after the pain stops and before the skin cancer sets in. I don't know how skin cancer works, but based on the garnet color of my skin, I'm going to find out.

A nice woman at the pharmacy walked me through all of the aloe vera options. I chose blue.
